Designing Resilient Clinical IT Infrastructure for Reliable Patient Care
Reliable patient care depends on more than an EHR subscription. Internet service, wireless coverage, identity, endpoints, integrations, power, backups, and vendor support form a clinical infrastructure that must continue operating, or fail safely, when individual components break.
Design around critical workflows
Identify systems required for scheduling, registration, chart access, prescribing, orders, results, communications, and billing. Define acceptable downtime and data loss for each, then align technical recovery priorities with clinical leadership.
Remove single points of failure
Where risk justifies it, consider diverse internet paths, resilient network equipment, protected power, redundant core services, tested backups, spare devices, and documented vendor escalation. Segment clinical, administrative, device, and guest networks to limit failure and security impact.
Make downtime usable
Maintain current procedures for patient identification, documentation, orders, results, communications, and later reconciliation. Train teams and run exercises; a binder that nobody has practiced is not a resilience program.
Test and improve
Measure availability, recurring incidents, patch status, backup restorations, recovery time, support escalation, and exercise findings. Record corrective actions and retest. The HIPAA Security Rule’s focus on confidentiality, integrity, and availability provides an important foundation for these decisions.
